Research Interests

Castilleja spp

I am interested in how both biotic and abiotic factors combine to influence rates and patterns of plant hybridization. I am addressing associated questions in Castilleja spp. (commonly known as Indian Paintbrushes); members of this species are hemiparasitic, they photosynthesize but acquire some nutrients and water from host species. My study sites are located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and include sites of three parental species and their co-occurring hybrids. Central themes of my research include:

  • Characterizing the extent and patterns of hybridization using AFLP and chloroplast markers as well as examining ploidy levels.
  • Examining trait variation in traits known to influence interactions with herbivores and pollinators.

Documenting interactions with pollinators, herbivores and host associations in the field and correlating such patterns with fitness.
