Research Interests

Potamopyrgus antipodarum

I am broadly interested in the interactions between members of different species. Genetic linkage (as it occurs both within and among species) and the quantitative variation of traits involved in community-level interactions are of great interest to biologists who seek to explain the evolution of local diversity. Many community-level interactions tend to be quite weak, and selection for community-level traits is also weak. However, when an organism's livelihood depends on another (e.g. food) and the relationship is decidedly more intimate (e.g. host-parasite), the interaction can be particularly strong and the genetic factors can be more straightforward. My thesis research focuses on the genomic variation for resistance to trematode infection present in natural populations of Potamopyrgus antipodarum . I am also examining the effect of copulation on innate resistance among these snails. The IGERT program has stimulated my interest in several new areas including: the role of genetic conflict in the evolution of development and the application of community ecology methods to studying genomic patterns in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
